The following words are from a poem entitled
‘The New Colossus’ by Emma Lazarus, and
were placed on a plaque by the huge statue in
1903. “The golden door” is a name for New
York Harbour.

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses
yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse
of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless,
tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
